Language Editing
Whether you’re a multilingual writer who wants their prose to sound more idiomatic or a scholar needing to translate complex ideas into public-facing writing, I can help you find a style that’s clear, inviting, and authoritative.
Language editing typically happens in two parts. First, I’ll go through your draft with a fine-tooth comb, correcting any obvious errors and giving my suggestions for grammar, punctuation, word choice, and tone. If there are patterns of error, I’ll point them out so that you know what to look out for in the future. Then, by email or in a virtual one-on-one consultation, we’ll work together to ensure that the draft reflects what you intend to say and that the style is appropriate for your chosen audience.
Developmental Editing
Developmental feedback is much more substantial than language editing, as it attends to global concerns like argument, structure, and style rather than to sentence-level issues. If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, a round of developmental feedback and a virtual one-on-one consultation can help you get fresh eyes on your project so that you can attack it with new energy. Not only will you have a clearer sense of what you want to accomplish, you’ll have a much better idea of how to get there.
As with language editing, the process typically happens in two parts. First, I’ll read the draft and identify ideas that need expansion or clarification, points that seem missing or out of order, and questions or objections an educated reader might have about your argument. Then, I’ll send your draft back with in-line comments, global feedback, and concrete suggestions for how to tackle any issues that emerge. If desired, we’ll meet virtually to discuss your ideas and concerns and make a plan for how to move forward.
